Keep That Smile :)
Keep Smilin'
Ever wonder why you feel better after you exercise or have a really good laugh? It's not just because you ran three miles or heard a good joke. According to the YourTotalHealth site on iVillage.com, that happy feeling, which can last up to 12 hours, actually has a scientific explanation: it's all in the endorphins.

Endorphins are neurotransmitters in the brain that reduce pain. They also make us feel good. Sometimes really good! Drugs like morphine, heroin, and cocaine are classic endorphin releasers, but lucky for us, Walker came up with this list of less addictive, less dangerous ways of feeling good ...

Eat a Chili Pepper. The rush you get after holding a hot pepper on your tongue is likely due to your body's protective response of releasing endorphins to reduce the pain.

Think Positive Thoughts. "When people take a placebo and they believe it's helpful, it often works," says Joel Fuhrman, M.D., author of Eat to Live. That's a direct result of the power of positive thinking, which can release endorphins that may actually ease pain when meds aren't effective.

Work Out. People who jog talk about a "runner's high" -- a release of endorphins that happens during a workout. Some experts believe the positive feeling you get when you meet a physical challenge is what causes the endorphin release. Whatever the cause: exercise enhances your mood.

Have an Pleasurable Moment. "It's a great way to get a rush of endorphins," says Dr. Fuhrman. "You may have to run for an hour to get a runner's high. Being with your partner is less effort." (And much more fun!)

Get Moved. Dr. Fuhrman says viewing beautiful art, watching a touching movie, or listening to an inspiring piece of music can produce endorphins.

Get Acupuncture. "Putting needles into the body is a release that may trigger endorphin production," says Dr. Fuhrman. Also, acupuncture patients benefit from a placebo effect -- they believe it's working, so it really does.

Eat Chocolate. We knew the cocoa bean had an addictive quality! Experts say the food closest to a drug is chocolate; it actually triggers an endorphin release. But there's no need to wolf down a pound at once: a bite or two will cause the same response.

Be Afraid. Whether you're watching a horror movie or feeling the rush of wind in your hair on a roller coaster, fear causes endorphin release. Why do you think extreme sports are so popular?

Worship the Sun. Researchers found that UV rays can trigger endorphin production. Of course, doctors recommend sunscreen. But sometimes, just knowing it's sunny outside can boost your endorphins-and your mood.

Have a Laugh. Whether it's a quick joke or a long comedy, a good laugh produces endorphins that increase your immune function and help your body fight disease.

Every one of us has to deal with stress in our lives, but even a small amount of stress (and how we deal with it) can be hazardous to our health. Not only is stress linked to heart disease and a weaker immune system, but it can make us less productive and lower our self-esteem.

So, if you're tired of letting stress get the best of you, listen up for some techniques for finding more calm and less chaos, thanks to a recent Today show segment:

Family drama: We've all had our share -- dealing with troubled siblings, getting caught in the middle of a feud between cousins, or caring for elderly parents. Some solutions:

Ask for volunteers. Get support from other family members, friends, or even hired help to get through tough family times.
Give up the guilt. Forget the idea that you should feel guilty taking time for yourself. Remember, your health is just as important as the health of the people you're caring for!

Career chaos: Some stress at work is normal, but when you're stressed 24/7, it's a problem -- it will slow you down and could make you sick. Some solutions:

Take a minute. Spend 3-5 minutes at least once a day listening to nature sounds, doing a short meditation, or breathing deeply. Toss a ball around or goof off with a computer game -- anything to lower your blood pressure and get you back on track.
Talk to your boss. If you feel like you're taking on too much, see if there are projects or tasks that can go to someone else or be put on the back-burner for a while.

Money meltdowns: There's a reason money is the #1 stressor for Americans -- dealing with bills or an unexpected expense can throw anyone into a tailspin. How to cope:

Have a solid plan. Design a plan to tackle your cash flow problem (have a garage sale, go to debt counseling, or find a new job). Think of other problem-solving ideas.
Do just one thing. If your get-out-of-debt solution is to save more, step one could be having your bank take $20 to deposit automatically in your savings each pay period.

Relationship blues: Relationships are tough, no matter what stage you're in. Some tips:

Divide tasks. Who's responsible for which chores is a classic relationship stress -- make a plan and stick to it.
Take stock. Figure out if your relationship is healthy enough to stay in. If your mate isn't supportive in helping you be the person you want to be, it might be time to leave.

Health hazards: Stress can make an already troubling health situation worse by raising your blood pressure, your heart rate, and even your blood sugar level. Some ideas:

Put wellness first. Start the day by meditating or exercising -- even a brief, brisk walk before work can help lower your blood pressure and make you feel energized.
Make health a no-brainer. Save time by ordering healthy groceries online, or book a personal trainer so you're less likely to skip out on exercising.

  • Miley Cyrus Autobiography???

She's only 15 years old, but MILEY CYRUS apparently has enough stories to fill a book. According to OK! magazine, an agreement is in place for a Miley Cyrus autobiography to be penned by a ghostwriter. An insider says, quote, "The plan is to move her away from Hannah Montana." The source adds, "She's outgrown it."

I was born in Sioux City and raised on a farm outside of Mapleton, just about 40 miles southeast of Sioux City. I am youngest of four kids, which let me get out of doing a lot of hog chores on the farm, but I did show pigs at the Ida County Fair a few times, which was a traumatizing event. I went for quite a swine ride as a pig ran out of its pen, through my legs and right past a hot guy at the end of the swine barn. This left me quite traumatized and my brothers and my sister still have a look of amusement on their face when this story is told all too often.

During study hall, I would often get in trouble for my talking habit. After spending a large amount of time in the principal’s office in high school for this crime, I realized I needed to put this gift/curse to good use.

I graduated from Iowa Western Community College with my Associates Degree in Electronic Media Studies-Radio. So far, my career has taken me to join morning shows and take on-air positions in Council Bluffs, North Platte, Dubuque, and now - thankfully, back home to Siouxland.

I am single, so in my spare time I enjoy listening to Garth Brooks (and was part of his fan club a few moons ago), Brad Paisley and LeAnn Rimes. I also love my wonderful family and nieces, “Grey’s Anatomy”, my entire 10 season DVD collection of “Friends” and the movie “Cinderella Man”.

Apparently there is a picture of me running around on the farm when I was little in a KSUX t-shirt and now I get to be a part of the KSUX family!!!
