Today is April Fools' Day, and a slowed economy, serious politicking, and global turbulence may be driving people to seek comic stimulus. Online research into April tomfoolery is up 40% over last year.

In the past 7 days, searches have soared 302% for "practical jokes" (as opposed to impractical jokes), 344% for "april fools' jokes," and another 1,564% for "april fools' pranks."
Get ready to file the workplace harassment claims: Your sacrosanct place of productivity isn't inviolable. Worker bees are investigating "april fools' office pranks" and "office pranks." You won't be able to answer a phone call without wondering if you'll hear "prank call soundboards."

In the spirit of public service,Don't Get PUNKED!! Beware these April fools:

Youth means guile. Sweet-faced, female pre-teens prone to uncontrolled giggling should be approached with extreme caution.

Don't trust them when they're older either: Conspiratorial women 35-44 make up 1 out of 10 pranksters. However, ladies 45-54 are more likely to be into verbal wit then short-sheeting.

Biggest gathering of April Fools? Depends. Folks most into "april fools day" hail from Wisconsin. However, Pennsylvanians led queries into jokes and pranks. Must be all that pre-primary stress.

Media conspiracies. Slate has come out with its April Fool's self-defense kit, although searchers have already been checking out "snopes hoaxes" to educate themselves against mass manipulation. Meanwhile, Wired panders to readers with its top 10 nerdy pranks.

Did you hear the one about... If you're going to tell a joke, avoid ones about dumb blondes, people's mothers, and Chuck Norris. Everyone has been reading them online already—and don't come crying when Chuck Norris' mom comes to kick your sorry patootie for making fun of her boy.

Indentity Theft
It's a Problem....

TIPS FOR PREVENTING IDENTITY THEFT

We've all been warned about the horrors of identity theft -- when someone steals your personal info and uses it to get money or credit or worse. We all have to be really careful when it comes to protecting our records so we don't end up having to repair the damage later, if someone steals our identity.

Follow these tips from MSN Money to protect your identity:

Keep your confidential info private. Your bank or credit card company will never call or email you and ask for your account info-they already have it!

Keep a list of what's in your wallet, including account numbers. But never keep your Social Security card in your wallet (or any card with your SSN on it).

Stop getting bank and credit card info in the mail. Most companies will give you the option of getting your statements only online.

Monitor your bank and credit card transactions for any unauthorized use. Thieves will sometimes start with small charges, to see if you'll notice.

Keep your car registration and insurance papers in a sealed envelope in your glove box and lock it (and your car!) when you're away.

Use your own PC when you do business online-public computers are less secure.

Look for suspicious devices and don't let anyone stand near you when you use an ATM. Take your receipt and never keep your PIN written down!

Don't store credit card numbers or other financial info on your cell phone.

If you're job hunting using resume Web sites, don't apply unless the employer has an address you can verify.

Keep your computer system software up-to-date and set it to the highest security level possible. Install anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall protection.
If you use wireless internet, make sure you know how to keep it secure.

Back up your data and store it somewhere away from your computer.

Don't open emails from people you don't know and don't open attachments unless you know what's in them.

Don't click on pop-ups. Set up your computer to block them.

Don't use your credit card online unless you're buying from a website you trust.

Use strong passwords: at least 6 characters, with no reference to your name or personal info. Use a different password for each site, and change them regularly.

Never send a user name, password or other confidential info in an email.

Turn off your computer when you're not using it (or put it in standby mode).

Don't keep passwords, tax returns or other financial info on your hard drive.

Do you still feel queasy when you think about that blunder you made in a job interview way back when? Here's something to make you feel better. CareerBuilder.com has come out with its annual list of the 10 most outrageous mistakes people have made during a job interview. More than three thousand hiring managers and human resources workers were polled to create the list. Here's a look:

* Candidate answered cell phone and asked the interviewer to leave her own office because it was a "private" conversation.

* Candidate told the interviewer he wouldn't be able to stay with the job long because he thought he might get an inheritance if his uncle died -- and his uncle wasn't "looking too good."

* Candidate asked the interviewer for a ride home after the interview.

* Candidate smelled his armpits on the way to the interview room.

* Candidate said she could not provide a writing sample because all of her writing had been for the CIA and it was "classified."

* Candidate told the interviewer he was fired for beating up his last boss.

* When applicant was offered food before the interview, he declined, saying he didn't want to line his stomach with grease before going out drinking.

* A candidate for an accounting position said she was a "people person" not a "numbers person."

* Candidate flushed the toilet while talking to interviewer during phone interview.

* Candidate took out a hair brush and brushed her hair.

12 THINGS YOU DON'T EVER WANT TO SAY TO A WOMAN

You can say a lot of nice things to a woman. You can tell her she's beautiful and whisper sweet nothings into her ear. Just whatever you do, NEVER say one of these phrases to her!
(Source: writerchick)

1. Who did that to your hair? Okay, we already know that our hair looks hideous -- no need to remind us.

2. Your time of the month, huh? If it isn't that time by saying that you are telling a woman that she is irrational and emotional and it's bugging you. If it is and she's feeling irrational and emotional you may end up wearing the frying pan. No good can come from uttering this statement. So don't!

3. I didn't recognize you from behind. You can say you didn't recognize them for any reason except the rear view. This should be self explanatory.

4. Are you going to eat all of that? To a woman, this is code for "you are too fat; stop eating you big cow." Saying this will not yield any good result.

5. Oh, I forgot it was your birthday. A woman's birthday is the day that she gets to be a Goddess -- if only in her own mind. The fact that you didn't recall that special day goes so far beyond insult that you may find that Mars is a very lonely place to live.

6. Are those real? Does it matter? Will it stop you from staring at them? Shut up about 'em!

7. Is that your real hair color? If it is purple, pink or blue you may get a pass on this question -- otherwise let it be between her and her hairdresser.

8. You remind me of my mother, sister, ex-girlfriend. Even if she does, she doesn't want to know about it.

9. When is the baby due? Or, oh my God, you're pregnant! Never ever, ever, EVER, assume a woman is pregnant. Unless she tells you herself, assume she is just going through a heavy carb phase.

10. You run a whole company by yourself? You might as well just say, "What's a fragile, little cream puff like you doing in a man's world?"

11. Don't you miss having a job? Usually said to stay-at-home moms -- the implication being that raising a family and running a household isn't work or fulfilling. You do not want to incite "Mom Wrath." Really. Trust me on this.

12. Anniversary? What anniversary? Expect to find your clothes in the front yard and your collection of moose heads following close behind.

Dating is Tough! But here are a few tips on how you can make it better, easier and less stressful....

Anyone who's ever navigated the dating world knows that dating takes confidence. And, let's face it, not everyone has it.So how do you shore up your own confidence and have some faith in yourself when it comes to finding Mr. or Ms. Right?

Margot Carmichael Lester at MSN Dating & Personals says to start by changing your perspective and getting to know yourself better.

The person on the outside should match the person on the inside. If you're insecure about yourself or pretending to be someone you're not, your confidence and self-worth will take a nose-dive. So, get to know who you really are by asking yourself:

What are my most important values in life?
Where do I see myself in 10 years?
What do I want most from life?
Whose company do I enjoy most?
What makes me laugh?
How do I spend my money?
Who do I admire most?
What's my purpose in life? (That one might be a bit trickier to answer!)

If you answer all these questions honestly, you can learn a lot more about what you really care about in life. That way, you can be more focused when you're out there dating and trying to find "The One." It's easier to follow your heart when you have a better idea where you want it to go!

Focus on the positive. We all have subconscious thoughts about how attractive we are or our chances for finding love. The key is not to let the negative thoughts override the positive ones! Whenever you catch yourself thinking, "I wish I were better-looking" or "I'll never find love" -- stop! Turn that thought into something positive, like "I have really gorgeous eyes" or "The right person for me is out there -- I just have to find them!"

Recognize all the good things about yourself -- whether it's being a good friend, having a wicked sense of humor, being able to cook or just being a cool person. Once you believe the good stuff about yourself, you'll notice how quickly other people respond. And that includes members of the opposite sex! You just have to make sure they see the same good things you see in yourself.

If you're having trouble appreciating the good things about yourself, ask some friends or family members for help. Get people to write down a few positive traits about you (they can even email them to you). Keep these lists around for whenever you're feeling less-than-confident. Better yet, give 'em a quick read before you head out for a date or party where you might meet potential romantic interests and you need a confidence boost!

Forrest Gump
Life is Like a Box of Chocolate why should I worry?? Um, Wait a minute!!

The current issue of Men's Health has a list of five things a lot of guys stress over, that they really don't need to be concerned about. But of course, they don't just leave it there, because they also give you a list of five things they believe are worth stressing over.

1. You'll Never Find Someone.

Why you shouldn't worry: There are more women than men in the world so chill out. And as you add birthdays, you add women to your dating range. Stop trying to hit bull's-eyes every night. Dating is unavoidable trial and error.

What you should worry about: Hooking up with a crazy person. Psychiatrist Dr. Scott Haltzman says, "If you think she's surrounded by nuts and she's the only one who's stable, rethink that."

2. Your Private Identity Is Public Property Because You're Always On The Internet.

Why you shouldn't worry: Only about 6% of identity thefts originate from online transactions.

What you should worry about: Pre-approved credit card offers. Not only are you eligible, but so is anyone who fishes the form out of your trash, fills it in, and heads to Vegas. Go to OptOutPrescreen.com to avoid offers for 5 years.

3. You're Completely Unprepared To Be A Parent.

Why you shouldn't worry: Babies are resilient and provide constant feedback. You'll make mistakes and learn. More good news - kids don't develop long-term memory (to hold it against you) until 2 or 3 years old.

What you should worry about: Pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears says bad nutrition hurts a kid more than alcohol and drugs combined. Lose your own bad chow habits and both you and your kid can eat better.

4. Your Retirement Home Will Be A Box Under the Interstate.

Why you shouldn't worry: Starting at age 25, contribute 10% of your salary each month to your 401(k) and you're good. If you're older than 25, contribute more.

What you should worry about: Your testosterone. It'll inspire you to invest in high-cost, high-risk, hard-to-sell holdings in hopes of a big strike. Stick to the 401(k), which protects you from that by limiting the kinds of investments it accepts.

5. You're Going To Die Suddenly.

Why you shouldn't worry: Your body isn't likely to fail you. But your driving judgment might. Car accidents are the biggest cause of death from men ages 25 to 39, so pay attention to the road. Oh, and hang up and drive, too.

What you should worry about: Your dad. Genetically speaking, he's your guide for 20 years down-the-road, especially for silent killers like cancer and heart disease. They are the leading causes of death in the 40 to 60 age range

Monday Morning Blues are real -- and there's actually a scientific explanation behind feeling lousy on Mondays.

Our internal clocks naturally operate on a day that is longer than 24 hours. By the time Monday rolls around each week, we've built up a sleep deficit of at least an hour. Making matters worse, of course, is the fact that many of us stay up late on weekends, building up an even bigger sleep deficit.

Here are some simple tips to make Monday mornings a little easier:

1. Get Extra Sleep -- If you can, sleep in an extra hour on Monday mornings. Or, make an effort to go to bed early on Sunday night.

2. Shorten Prep Time -- If you can't get that full extra hour of sleep, take action Sunday night to shorten your morning preparation time so that you can set the alarm for 15 minutes later than usual. Wash your hair, pack lunches, lay out your clothes or pack your briefcase on Sunday night.

3. Get Up -- Sleep experts say it's important to hop out of bed the moment you wake up on Monday morning. Staying in the warmth of your bed only draws out the agony.

4. Cold Shower -- End your shower with a jolt of cold water to wake up fast. Or exercise in the morning to get your blood pumping and to release those feel-good endorphins.

5. Sunlight -- Get into the sunlight as soon as possible. Bright light tells your body that it is indeed the morning and helps reset your internal clock.

6. Coffee -- Coffee, when used in moderation, can give your Monday mornings that much-needed boost.

7. Prepare on Friday - Anticipate your Monday morning on Friday afternoon. Fight the temptation to race away from a messy desk. Clean up your desk and leave yourself a to-do list to make Monday morning a little more tolerable.

Bandit Special 78 TA
Dear Santa, I would like this or the General Lee for Christmas. I have provided video evidence of why they would be great gifts below!!!

When it comes to shopping, men are more likely to respond to more functional aspects of the experience -- such as the availability of parking, whether the item they came for is in stock, and the length of the checkout line. For men, shopping is a mission. They are out to buy a targeted item and flee the store as quickly as possible.

Researchers speculate that a woman's role as caregiver persists even as women's professional responsibilities mount. This responsibility contributes to women's more acute shopping awareness, and higher expectations. On the other hand, after generations of relying on women to shop effectively for them, men's interest in shopping has diminished.

"Men Buy, Women Shop" also found:

Women are more likely to experience problems while shopping than men--53% vs. 48%, with women over age 40 reporting more problems than men in the same age group.

For 29% of women, "lack of help when needed" is the top problem.

The problem most likely to result in lost business from women is inadequate sales help.
29% of men, however, ranked "difficulty in finding parking close to the store's entrance" as the No. 1 problem

The problem most likely to result in lost business from men is if the product they came to buy is out of stock.

For men, an associate's interest in helping them find an item is most important, followed by the sales associate's effort in getting them through checkout quickly.

For women, store loyalty is related to sales associates' familiarity with the products in the store and an ability to determine what products best suit the customer.

For women, the problem that would make respondents so angry they would never return to a store was employees who "acted like you were intruding on their time or their own conversations."

For men, it was employees who were "lazy, i.e., would not check for additional stock or take you to the item you were looking for."

Delia Passi, founder of WomenCertified says, "Women are gatherers. Men are hunters. Women walk into a store and scan. Men look for a specific aisle." Scientific research, she notes, shows women have better peripheral vision than men, which would benefit them as gatherers.

Another sales expert said, "Women tend to be more focused on people while men act almost as if they are dealing with an ATM machine. In fact, they want to deal with an ATM machine. They really don't want to deal with a person." Hear What Siouxlanders Think Below!!

Surf's Up
A Regular Guy would rather have this kinda Weather!!

I figured since we are in the depth of winter around the midwest I would give you a glimpse of how a regular guy thinks about weather.....

The number of men who don't grab an umbrella when there's a 100% chance of rain: 3 in 4.

Number of men who check the forecast before dressing in the morning: 2 in 5.

TEN Holiday Office Party Mistakes to Avoid!!

By Rachel Zupek, CareerBuilder.com writer

No matter who you are, where you work or what you do for a living, somebody in your company dreads the annual holiday party.

Employees think the company party imposes on their free time during an already busy season, says J.T. O’Donnell, career expert and co-author of the nationally syndicated weekly column, “J.T. and Dale Talk Jobs.” Workers aren’t paid to go; they’d rather see the amount of money being spent on the party divided into bonus checks; and their definition of "party" means letting loose and being themselves with friends – not acting professional to gain the respect of their co-workers.

“[Americans] place more emphasis on our careers as a way to define ourselves personally,” O’Donnell says. “At any corporate-sponsored event, we must keep in mind – even if it is begrudgingly – that we must think about our actions and the impact they can have, both positively and negatively, on our careers.”

Unfortunately, this fact is lost on some employees. According to a recent study, 36 percent of employers reported such behavioral problems as excessive drinking, off-color jokes, sexual advances and fistfights at last year’s company party. Fifteen percent of employees who engaged in inappropriate behavior reported a negative impact on his or her career growth.

When work is bad, life is bad, so don’t take any risks this holiday season. Here are the top 10 offenses to avoid at this year’s company holiday bash.

1. Assuming you aren’t required to go.
Unless you’ve got an unbelievably good reason, you need to attend. Not attending speaks volumes about your attitude toward the company.

“If you can’t appreciate what the company is doing to celebrate the holidays and its efforts to make you feel like a part of their family, then you send a clear message that you don’t put much stock in the employee-employer relationship,” O’Donnell says.

If you absolutely can’t go, let management know in advance and give specific reasons why not.

2. Dressing inappropriately.
Don’t dress as if you were going to a club or trolling for dates, O’Donnell says. Even if you’re hittin’ the town later, you still need to dress properly for the party.

“Maybe you’re known for being very stylish in your private life, but when it comes to a work function, it’s better to blend in as opposed to making a statement that might get misinterpreted,” she says.

If you show up and realize you aren’t dressed appropriately, try to make light of it. Better to acknowledge it’s not acceptable than pretend that it is.

3. Attending on an empty stomach.
Holiday events typically involve drinks and appetizers before the meal. But, appetizers often don’t make it all the way through the crowd, O’Donnell says. It’s better to get some food in your stomach prior to the event so your first drink doesn’t go straight to your head.

“If you’re feeling ‘warm and fuzzy’ and realize you haven’t eaten in hours, put the drink down, switch to water and find some food,” she suggests.

4. Pitching ideas to upper management.
Some folks view the company party as a way to schmooze the higher-ups or tell them their grand plans to save the company.

“While managers do use these events to meet and spend time with employees they don’t regularly come in contact with, they aren’t looking to strategize on work,” O’Donnell says. “Keep the talk to lighter subjects. There’s nothing worse than a brown-nosing badger to ruin a manager’s evening.”

5. Getting drunk!
Seventy percent of companies are serving alcohol at their holiday parties this year, a 15 percent drop from last year, according to a recent survey.

There’s a reason for this, people!

Bottom line: Don’t drink excessively at the holiday party. You’ll end up saying or doing something you’ll regret.

6. Hooking up!
Co-workers secretly harboring feelings for each other often think it’s OK to act on those feeling at the holiday event, O’Donnell says. Not so.

“It’s important to act like you do at work. You’re not paid to get cozy on the job, and the holiday party is an extension of your job,” she says.

Keep your distance until after the event when you can have some privacy.

7. Bringing a ‘crazy’ date.
If your spouse or date is known as the ‘life of the party,’ there’s a chance he or she will make the night unforgettable – and not in a good way, O’Donnell says.

“Some people think, ‘It shouldn’t matter how they act, as long as I act OK,’” she says. “You’re guilty by association.”

Don’t give employers any reason to wonder if you aren’t as you appear on the job. If your date starts to make a scene, cut the night short.

8. Being a ‘Scrooge.’
Don’t be a Debbie Downer and walk around with a scowl on your face, O’Donnell says. If you aren’t excited to be there, keep your thoughts to yourself.

“These events are meant to give employees an opportunity to connect on a personal level so they can relate to one another at work,” she says. “You don’t have to overdo it, but you have to at least do it.”

Check your negativity at the door, put on a smile and socialize.

9. Not using your best table manners.
It seems obvious, but for many, manners go out the door after business hours – especially with a drink in hand, O’Donnell says. No swearing, chew with your mouth closed and remember to say “please,” “thank you” and “excuse me.”

10. “Dirty dancing” or executing “athletic displays.”
“Even though krumping, bumping and grinding are all the rage, these moves have no place on the corporate dance floor,” O’Donnell advises. “Moreover, back flips, splits, jumps and spins can only lead to disaster.”

Keep moves clean and in control. Even if folks are begging for you to dance, O’Donnell says, keep in mind that everyone loves to watch other people embarrass themselves.

7 Secrets to a GREAT Nap!!

The older we get, the more we realize that naptime isn't just for kindergarteners. There's a ton of research out there showing that a midday snooze can increase productivity and alertness at work. Not only that, but naps are better than coffee when it comes to fighting mid-afternoon sluggishness -- you know, that sleepy feeling that usually hits between 2 and 5 in the afternoon.

1. The Odd Couple: Coffee and a Nap. Despite what you might think, a cup of joe won't ruin your nap, it will enhance it. A 2003 Japanese study found that you can alleviate sleepiness by combining a short snooze with coffee. Sound nuts? Here's how it works: caffeine takes 20 to 30 minutes to kick in, just enough time for a nap! That way, there are 2 benefits: you've rested and you're ready to go when you wake up.

2. The Nicest Nap Hour. 2 or 3 p.m. is the ideal nap hour -- late enough to fit into your natural snooze zone but early enough that it won't interfere with your night sleep. Take your afternoon schedule into consideration when making nap plans. We recommend taking a mid-afternoon snooze just before a big meeting. Dozing right before the meeting will make sure you're not drifting off during the meeting!

3. Length Does Matter. A good nap length is between 20 and 30 minutes. This gives you the restorative benefits of sleep without that groggy feeling --"sleep drunkenness."

4. Making the Bed. Location may be the toughest nap dilemma. If your company has a health or nurse's room, that could make a good place for snoozing. Otherwise, you may have to turn your cubicle into a nap room, which means you'll probably have to curl up under your desk. Heading to your car is another option -- but make sure a window is open and the engine is off.

5. Set an Alarm. Chances are, if you're tired enough to take a nap, you won't magically wake up on your own. So set an alarm, both to avoid the grogginess of a long nap and to make sure you don't sleep through anything important.

6. Keep it Consistent. We suggest working that 20-minute nap into a particular sleep routine to make it part of your body's expected cycle. The easiest way to do that is by recording your snoozing habits in a sleep log.

7. Be an Alert Napper. If you always feel the need for a nap, think about your nightly sleep schedule. Are you down to only 5 or 6 hours? While a quick nap is a good refresher, it doesn't make up for hours lost at night. Also, if you're getting 8 hours of sleep at night yet still need a nap, that might be a sign of a sleep disorder or other health problem, so check with your doctor or look online for more sleep resources.

On November 9th I got the priviledge and honor of giving a small token of appreciation to our men and women serving overseas. I assisted Support Siouxland Soldiers with an event called "Pack the Humvee" collecting items for care packages to be sent to Siouxland Soldiers on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am happy to report that according to project organizer Sarah Peterson, every soldier will get a package as a result of your kindness and generosity. I have to agree with her that I am proud of all of you. I saw all ages donating everything from sunflower seeds to cash! Not only was I impressed by what parents here teach their kids about selfless acts of kindness and doing the right thing but by everyone's response to my challenge to donate. Being a veteran myself, I consider events like this a HIGH priority and I can tell you that I am humbled by your kindness and support and very proud to be a former soldier and a Siouxlander. BOOO
I THINK YOU HAVE MY STAPLER.....

THACKERVILLE, Okla. - Feeling like playing hooky, but nervous about getting caught? The Excused Absence Network has got your back.

For about $25, students and employees can buy excuse notes that appear to come from doctors or hospitals. Other options include a fake jury summons or an authentic-looking funeral service program complete with comforting poems and a list of pallbearers.

Some question whether the products are legal or ethical — or even work — but the company’s owners say they’re just helping people do something they would have done anyway.

“Millions of Americans work dead-end jobs, and sometimes they just need a day off,” said John Liddell, co-founder of the Internet-based company Vision Matters, which sells the notes as part of its Excused Absence Network. “People are going to lie anyway. How many people go visit their doctors every day when they’re not sick because they just need a note?”

The company’s customers receive templates so they can print the notes after typing the name and address of a local doctor or emergency room. Those who choose jury duty as an excuse to miss work enter their county courthouse information on the form.

Though the company’s disclaimer advises the notes are “for entertainment purposes only,” its Web site shows pictures of people sunbathing and playing golf using the fabricated excuses. One testimonial says: “I’ve managed to take the nine weeks off using these templates! It couldn’t be any easier!”

Actually, for one New Jersey woman it wasn’t so easy. She was arrested this year after using one of the company’s notes to support her claim she was too injured to appear in traffic court for a speeding ticket. She was caught after court officials called the chiropractor listed and he told them he never heard of the woman.

Vision Matters co-founder Darl Waterhouse said people looking to trick their bosses probably won’t get caught because of federal restrictions on the release of patient medical information.

But some are concerned about potential problems.

If bosses find out the notes are not authentic, they might think the medical provider helped in the scam, said Dr. John Z. Sadler, a psychiatry and clinical sciences professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Reputations could be unfairly damaged, and accreditation or license problems could arise, he said.

“I can’t speak for doctors in general, but for me this practice sounds awful,” said Sadler, also the director of UT-Southwestern’s Program in Ethics in Science and Medicine. “This business practice seems comparable to the ways ‘diploma mills’ and ‘term papers online’ are wrongful.”

Sadler said people who skip work without a legitimate reason are burdening conscientious employees.

“If I was the co-worker, I’d turn the rascal in,” Sadler said.

Many businesses require documentation if an employee misses work. But several companies declined to reveal their specific policies or say whether the possibility their workers might use fake excuse notes is a concern.

“At Lockheed Martin, we have a highly ethical culture and it is extremely unlikely any of our employees would use these kinds of services,” according to a statement from Lockheed Martin Aeronatics Co. in Fort Worth, Texas.

An annual nationwide survey of more than 300 human resource executives found an absenteeism rate of about 2.3 percent this year. That’s down from 2.5 percent in 2006, the highest rate since 2.7 percent in 1999.

The survey was conducted by the Harris Interactive consulting firm for CCH Inc., which provides employment law information.

The executives surveyed said that two-thirds of employees who call in sick at the last minute are really missing work due to family issues, personal needs, stress and an entitlement mentality. Personal illness accounts for only 34 percent of the absences.

The Vision Matters founders said many employees are fed up with working long hours for little pay, then having no flexibility if they needed to tend to a sick relative or attend their children’s school activities.

“If employers would treat people the way they need to be treated, people wouldn’t be using these notes,” Liddell said.

Liddell and Waterhouse met about four years ago while working in security for a manufacturing company. After seeing several employees write fake doctor notes, the men launched the Internet business on about $300 each.

Liddell runs the company from a laptop in his home in Thackerville, a town of about 400 located a few miles north of the Oklahoma-Texas line. He won’t reveal sales numbers, but says the Web site gets about 15,000 hits a month.

Waterhouse said customers have used the notes not only to miss work but to get out of gym membership contracts.

“There’s no way we could think of every way to use it,” he said.
