Grammy notes from my couch
Overall, I thought the evening was a fun one. The first 90 minutes were fast moving and packed with highlights. The last 20 minutes was entertaining as well…. Now, the stuff in the middle? Not so much. A 3 hour show would have made more of an impact. How many tributes and adulations can we give to old bald guys in fancy suits? Come on Grammy people, think of the viewers. It’s about us, not your buddies..
Random thoughts
* Stephen Colbert was a pretty funny dude and his daughter was genuinely moved after her father won Best comedy album
- Beyonce’s “Put a Ring on It” won for song of the year. What year? That song has been out for 4 years now, right? Move on already.
- Speaking of Beyonce. You know the artist is bored with her song when she sings another one in the middle of it… Weird.
- I’m a big fan of the Zac Brown Band. They tore it up last night!
- Attention CMT – How about a “Crossroads” with the ZBB and the Ting Tings? I saw them on SNL and their energy is almost equal to the ZBB. Plus, the alliteration is catchy…Zee Bee Bee with dee Ting Tings… That’s funny.
- Lady A was fan-flippin-tastic with their “Need You Now” performance. Way to go Hillary Scott who kept pluggin’ away after the curtain fell on her.
- Nice to see Sioux City North grad Grant Mickelson on last night? What other Sioux City natives have graced the Grammy’s stage?
- I love the concept of the Black Eyed Peas. Take note country. Have 4 lead singers. Hire studio musicians for the rest. They all take turns singing and sound fresh every time. Heck, duets don’t do that well in country anyway recently. Think Rascal Flatts and then adding a female that rocks like Fergie. How cool would that be?
- Thank you to the people behind the movie “Monsters vs. Aliens”. They just released the DVD package with a mini 13 minute movie in 3D which allowed my wife and I to see the Michael Jackson Tribute in #D last night. It was a nice highlight of the show. Carrie Underwood was AWESOME.. All the performers were on that song that I’ve never heard before last night. I was impressed. Now, as for wearing glasses for future programming of live sporting events on ESPN…I don’t think I’m a fan. I can wear them for about 8 minutes tops. 4 hours? Fuhgettaboutit!
- By the way, how much is rock hurting? Green Day and U2 were nominated along with 2 retired acts and Dave Matthews? Really? Dave Matthews is a rock guy? I’m not seeing it.. Has there been a new “rock” act in the last 15 years? Anyone?
- I thought it was a nice showcase of the country format last night. To contrast the rock world, the last 5 years have graced us with Taylor Swift, Lady A, the ZBB, Sugarland, Jason Aldean etc… One presenter said that country has never been more popular. Now, Garth, B&D, Reba, AJ, McGraw and crew may dismiss that statement, but it’s something to think about. What’s hotter? Now or the early 90’s.
