Tony's ACM blog....
I now know what it feels like to be a high school coach. You know
the one… For me, it was Jim Etter. He would always criticize the very
best athletes. He absolutely KNEW they could be better. Hard working
benchwarmers like me often got a “good job buddy” pat on the pack. I
maximized my talent.
The bare bones of the ACM Awards were good – they could have been so much better. I will now jeopardize any possibility of KSUX getting an ACM Award of any kind. The sound of the show was dreadful. Eric Church’s performance unplugged and Blake’s acoustic set were good – but, man – many performances (like Brad Paisley’s) was not even mic’d up properly… Additionally, wire up one venue and let it ride – no need for that other building – that sound was off too. This is the same thing every year – this is why the CMA Awards remain the primo event of the calendar year. Ok, adios’ KSUX ACM Award – You wouldn’t hear our acceptance speech anyway…
The theme of the night “aside from technical problems” was a collaborative spirit of teamwork and chemistry among country artists. It seemed like half the talent roster popped up on the first song with Blake, Luke, Pistol Annies etc… Country stars dig other country stars – and it seems genuine. Watching one episode of Idol tells you that type of bond DOES NOT HAPPEN in other formats.
Highlights of the night:
Little Big Town’s “Your side of the Bed” – GREAT LYRICS that embody the greatness that is country. The two lovers on the bed didn’t really mesh the concept of the song, but whatever..
Garth returns! He sounded great. Looked younger than when he left the spotlight. I guess a decade of rest and 300 million bucks in the bank will do that for a dude
Florida Georgia Line rules! – They picked up some hardware and have a spirit that plays well on television, radio and…hopefully a Sioux City concert stop?
Eric Church shines! – Not bad for a guy that got kicked off the Flatts concert. His “Like Jesus Does” was heartfelt and hat-less. Go figure!
The Band Perry – Riverdance meets Metallica – country style. Their performance was needed after a few acoustic ballads…
Miranda’s speech about the women of country
Carrie Underwood’s lipstick. Musically, she has matured so much from her time on American Idol…
“Highway Don’t Care” with Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift and guitars from Keith Urban!
Man, I love that Paul Harvey Dodge RAM commercial – great placement on this broadcast…
Bummers of the show
Blake and Luke went into hiding for the middle two hours of the night…
Rascal Flatts no show? I can’t remember a show without them.
No Kacey Musgraves. She has the #2 overall cd on charts now and #1 country cd…. Plus, she was on CBS Sunday Morning News today – I thought they were priming the pump for tonight…
Aside from Miranda and Luke Bryan- the acceptance speeches not too noteworthy.
Overall grade – solid B
If, they would run a few laps around the football field in the production room of the ACM Awards – it could have easily have been an A.
We knew this guy put on a tremendous show at the TEC!
